The instructors for each course are experts in their respective fields, who have completed, or are near completing, a higher-level degree (PhD, or M.A.). Hyphenology recruits the instructors from the top universities in Europe, including the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Paris.

Cindy Camatsos, PhD
Program Director
Of Greek descent, Cindy was born in Mississippi and is currently living in Greece. She received her BA in English from Wesleyan University, continued her graduate studies at the University of Oxford, and received her PhD in Modern Languages and Literature from the University of Cambridge. She currently teaches part-time at the University of Athens, and co-ordinates all aspects of Hyphenology, which she founded in 2006.
Carlos Martins, PhD
Course(s): History of the Universe / The Night Sky
Born in Viana do Castelo (Portugal), Carlos graduated from the University of Porto in 1993 with an interdisciplinary Physics and Applied Mathematics degree (specializing in Astrophysics), and obtained his PhD in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge in 1997. He divides his time between the Centre for Physics of the University of Porto, the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in Cambridge, and the Institut d'Astrophysique in Paris. He works at the interface between astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics, focusing on testing theories of the early universe observationally. Outside office hours he can often be found attending classical music concerts (especially if they feature Bach, Mahler or Monteverdi) or going to movies. He is also an avid reader, has a slight addiction to chocolate, and is making an effort to improve his cooking and to learn a fifth language.
Elena Anastasaki, PhD
Course(s): Analyzing the Fairy Tale
Elena studied French Literature at the University of Athens, Greece, and obtained her PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Kent, England, and the University Paris VIII, France. She has taught French language and European Literature at the University of Kent, English Literature at Southeastern (The American University of Athens), and "Gender and Literature" at Panteion University, Athens. She is currently teaching "World Literature" at the Open University in Greece. She is also a qualified translator and has translated into Greek a variety of books, ranging from fairy tales to Lord Byron. Her interests are literature and cinema, and she has a rare ability to spread her positive energy to students.
Caroline Bertoneche, PhD
Course(s): Reading & Writing Poetry
Caroline received her undergraduate degree at the University of Paris VI in English literature, and her Masters & D.Phil from the University of Oxford. She currently teaches literature at University of Reims in France.
Tim Coomar, MA
Course(s): Deconstructing Religion
Tim received his BA in Modern Languages from the University of Cambridge and has completed a second degree in Theology at the University of Oxford. He is currently studying in Philadelphia, PA, taking a second Masters in Theology.
Gina Gurban, PhD
Saving Nature: Introduction to Environmental Awareness/Studies
Gina's interest in law and environmental studies is evident from her many degrees: she received her Juris Doctor (Law) at the Pazmany Peter University Law School in Budapest, and is currently a PhD (International Environmental Law) candidate at the same university. She received a Masters in Environmental Management from the University of San Francisco, and an LLM from Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, LA. She has worked at the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs in New York City, and has worked at the Hungarian Ministry of Environment and Water. Upon completing her PhD, she moved to Brussels, where she currently works for the Environmental branch of the European Union. When she is not trying to save the environment and participating in hands-on activism, she enjoys cooking and wants to live by the sea.
Anna Spartin, BA
Course(s): Modern Greek Language
Anna worked at a number of different high schools, as a teacher, for over 20 years. Her last position was at the American Community Schools-Athens, where she taught Modern Greek language and ancient & Modern Greek history. She divides her time between Athens and Chicago, loves traveling and literature.
Dimitris Fousekis, BA
Course(s): Cryptography
Born in Tripoli, Libya, Dimitris spent the first few years of his life in Rome, Italy. He currently lives in Athens, Greece, and works as a freelance illustrator in the book industry and specializes in children's books. He has published seven books and teaches the Hyphenology art classes.
